Discover the Charm of Kenmore, NY

The Village of Kenmore, recognized by the American Planning Association as one of the top ten great neighborhoods in the United States, combines historic charm with a welcoming, community-driven atmosphere. Just north of Buffalo, Kenmore is known for its tree-lined streets, beautifully maintained homes, and lively central business district. Longstanding businesses like King Condrell’s Candy and Ice Cream Shop and Plaka Greek Restaurant provide a sense of continuity, while popular new spots, including Spot Coffee, Jay’s Artisan Pizza, La Davina Tacos, Clay Handi, India Star, and Home Taste, offer a vibrant variety of cuisines. This blend of old and new makes Kenmore a uniquely appealing place to call home.

Kenmore is also one of the most densely populated incorporated villages in the United States. With a population of 15,205 as of the 2020 census, it remains a tightly-knit community within the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metro area, located in the southern part of the Town of Tonawanda.

A Rich History

Often referred to as “Buffalo’s First Suburb,” Kenmore’s story began in the late 19th century as Buffalo’s population surged post-Civil War. When electric streetcars became available, Louis P.A. Eberhardt purchased land just north of the Buffalo border in 1888 to develop a suburban community. With the addition of churches, stores, and schools, Kenmore quickly took shape as a bustling village. In 1899, with 313 residents signing a petition, the Village of Kenmore was officially incorporated.

Over time, Kenmore has continued to grow and adapt. In 1903, the Kenmore Fire Department was established, followed by the Police Department in 1919. The construction of the Kenmore Junior-Senior High School on Delaware Road in 1924, still in use today, showcases the area’s commitment to community development. Even the iconic Kenmore Municipal Building, built during the Great Depression by renowned architect EB Green, highlights the cooperative spirit between Kenmore and the Town of Tonawanda, with both sharing the space to this day.

Fun Facts and Traditions

Kenmore’s name itself is steeped in local lore. According to the former village historian Frederick Parkhurst, Kenmore’s “Father,” Louis Eberhardt, declined the suggestion to name the village after himself, opting instead for a name that recalls the heritage of other “Kenmore” locales, potentially inspired by the small island off Ireland or the village in Scotland.

With a rich history, strong sense of community, and a perfect mix of tradition and modern living, Kenmore remains an inviting neighborhood for new and current residents alike. Whether enjoying a walk down its historic streets or savoring a meal at one of its renowned eateries, Kenmore offers a unique slice of Americana just minutes from Buffalo.
